Finnlines’ investment programme in action
Jumboisation for energy efficiency
Finnlines has started a new capex programme, the Energy Efficiency and Emission Reduction Investment Programme. As part of the programme, Finnlines will lengthen four of its “Breeze series” vessels (MS Finnsky, MS Finnsun, MS Finntide, MS Finnwave), with an option of two additional vessels. The modification work will start in September 2017.
In spring 2017, Finnlines has signed a contract with Remontowa S.A. shipyard in Gdansk, Poland where the actual work will commence in mid September 2017. The yard is committed to perform this work in less than two months for each vessel. The whole lengthening programme will be completed in May 2018.
The vessel will be cut in two and a 30-metre section will be inserted between the parts. When the sections are welded together again, each vessel will have around 1,000 additional lane metres to her capacity.
The close to 30% capacity increase will considerably reduce the energy consumption per transported unit compared to the original vessel. In other words, it will improve energy efficiency further and thus contribute more to reducing emissions.
The Energy Efficiency and Emission Reduction Investment Programme will amount to approximately EUR 70 million.
