Finnlines and the port of Långnäs to open a new passenger terminal in Åland
Finnlines and the Port of Långnäs opened a new passenger terminal in Åland on Friday, May 8, 2026. The new terminal meets the growing demand for passenger services and significantly streamlines passenger movement between the ship and the terminal.
The opening ceremony was attended by customers, key stakeholders and decision-makers, port representatives, and journalists. Finnlines was represented at the event by CEO Thomas Doepel and Head of Passenger Services Marco Palmu, while the Port of Långnäs was represented by CEO Ronny Eriksson.
“There was a wonderful and enthusiastic atmosphere at the opening ceremony. It was nice to see how the guests and the first passengers welcomed the new terminal,” says Finnlines CEO Thomas Doepel.
“We see significant growth potential in tourism in Åland and want to be actively involved in developing the region’s accessibility and appeal in cooperation with local stakeholders. Our goal is to provide reliable transport solutions and serve as a strong partner to Åland’s tourism and hotel industry,” Thomas Doepel continues.
The terminal is part of a long-term development plan
The new terminal is located right next to the dock, and the walk from the ship to the terminal is shorter than before. This speeds up and simplifies both disembarking and boarding. With the growth in cruise traffic in particular, the terminal enhances the overall customer experience.
The terminal serves Finnlines’ Superstar-class vessels, M/S Finnsirius and M/S Finncanopus, which operate on the Naantali–Långnäs–Kapellskär route. Passenger numbers on the route have grown significantly with the introduction of the new vessels.
“The new terminal brings the ship and passengers tangibly closer together and speeds up and streamlines the travel chain. Smooth and barrier-free movement has been taken into account even better than before, making travel more pleasant and efficient,” says Marco Palmu, Head of Passenger Services at Finnlines.
The new terminal building is approximately 16 meters high and has a floor area of about 500 square meters. The terminal offers passengers modern waiting areas as well as direct access to the ship.
“The number of passengers and cars passing through Långnäs has grown significantly, and the port sees busy traffic every day. This development is of great importance to tourism in Åland,” says Ronny Eriksson, CEO of the Port of Långnäs.
The project is part of the long-term development of the Port of Långnäs. The investment of approximately three million euros supports tourism in the region and strengthens Åland’s position as an important hub between Finland and Sweden.
