Finnlines follows the principles of sustainable development and takes its social responsibility, as well as economic and environmental considerations, into account in all its operations. To strengthen and clarify its environmental responsibility efforts, Finnlines has adopted the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals as part of its operations and is committed to supporting these goals.

Environmental research

Understanding and continuously monitoring changes in the environment is essential for sound decision making.

For more than 20 years, we have provided researchers with the opportunity to conduct research onboard our vessels. This has enabled scientists to monitor the condition of the Baltic Sea and carry out environmental measurements.

Long term projects:

  • Alg@line: Automated monitoring of Baltic Sea water quality onboard Finnmaid, carried out by the Finnish Environment Institute (SYKE).
  • MEPTEK: Comparative study of emission reduction technologies in shipping, conducted by South Eastern Finland University of Applied Sciences (XAMK).
  • COMPLETE: Research on potentially harmful non native species entering the Baltic Sea via vessels, involving several research institutes and universities across the Baltic Sea region.
  • IHATEC: Research project on propeller slipstream induced erosion phenomena, led by the Universities of Braunschweig and Hamburg, in cooperation with WK Consult and BAW.

Animal welfare

Finnlines embarked on the journey towards a sustainable future several years ago. We continuously search for improvements and undertake ambitious projects to ascertain that every aspect of our undertaken goals within the Agenda 2030 is being met. Animal welfare is an integral part of that work and by setting up measurable criteria for higher welfare amongst broiler chickens and putting an end to the use of cages within the egg industry, we are asking for a more sustainable production together with our suppliers.

Finnlines has adopted the European Chicken Commitment and has committed to reach the higher welfare standards by 2026 for 100% of the broiler chicken in its supply chain. Finnlines will also ensure that at least 20% of its chicken meat volume comes from farms that meet these criteria and guarantee the animals’ access to free range.
