Finnlines implements Green Lane low-carbon shipping solution with Stora Enso

Stora Enso and Finnlines have expanded their cooperation to support the decarbonisation of logistics for packaging board and wood-based products and reduce transport-related emissions across European supply chains. As part of the collaboration, Stora Enso will utilise Finnlines’ Green Lane service for the sea transportation of its products.

Green Lane is Finnlines’ low-carbon shipping solution designed for customers seeking to reduce emissions from maritime transport. The service offers renewable biofuel and electricity-based alternatives that significantly reduce greenhouse gas emissions compared with conventional fossil-fuel-based shipping.

The cooperation with Stora Enso represents a concrete implementation of Green Lane concept in the Packaging board and wood-based products logistics segment. It demonstrates how the solution can be integrated into existing industrial supply chains while maintaining reliable liner services and efficient cargo flows.

The renewable biofuel option can reduce well-to-wake greenhouse gas emissions by up to 90% compared with conventional fossil fuels.

By selecting Green Lane, customers can reduce emissions of their value chain and support their climate and sustainability targets. For the transport covered by the service, Finnlines ensures that an equivalent amount of energy from fossil fuels is replaced with energy from alternative fuels within the fleet network.

Emission reductions achieved through the Green Lane service are independently verified annually in accordance with internationally recognised standards and regulatory frameworks, including EU MRV, FuelEU Maritime, ISO 14064 and EN 16258. Biofuel used is ISCC certified. Customers subscribing to the programme receive a certificate verifying the reported emission reductions.

A low-carbon transport solution for industrial supply chains

For Finnlines, Green Lane is part of a broader offering for industrial cargo customers across Europe, supporting sectors such as forest industry products, steel and metals, automotive, machinery, chemicals and construction materials with reliable maritime transport and measurable emission reductions. The service is offered on selected routes and customer flows, subject to the availability of renewable energy.

Finnlines’ extensive route network connects key industrial and logistics hubs across the Baltic Sea, North Sea and Bay of Biscay. Through its North Sea & Biscay Line, the company provides regular liner services linking Finland with Poland, Belgium, Spain, the United Kingdom and other major European markets.

Finnlines’ services to Spain are operated by Finneco-class hybrid ro-ro vessels, which incorporate advanced energy-efficiency technologies, including air lubrication systems, high-capacity batteries and solar panels. Designed for demanding industrial cargo, the vessels combine advanced design, optimized operations, and economies of scale.

“This cooperation with Stora Enso demonstrates how shipping companies and industrial customers can work together to achieve meaningful emission reductions. Green Lane has been developed for industrial customers looking for reliable ways to reduce transport-related emissions without compromising supply chain efficiency. While shipping continues to rely on fossil fuels, partnerships like this turn climate targets into concrete actions and measurable results,” says Blasco Majorana, Finnlines’ Line Manager.

“The collaboration supports Stora Enso’s broader Climate agenda and demonstrates how close cooperation with logistics partners can accelerate the transition towards lower-carbon supply chains. Our customers increasingly expect low emission transports throughout the value chain, and logistics plays an important role in achieving our climate ambitions. By integrating Finnlines’ Green Lane solution into key transport routes, we are taking action to reduce our logistics-related emissions,” says Karl Fjærvoll, Sourcing Manager, Liner Services at Stora Enso.

Finnlines developed Green Lane to help customers reduce transport-related emissions and meet increasingly ambitious climate and sustainability targets. The cooperation with Stora Enso demonstrates how the solution can be implemented in practice and scaled across industrial supply chains.

The partnership is a concrete example of how industry and logistics providers can work together to accelerate the transition to lower-emission transport solutions.
