Building sustainable and efficient transport
Finnlines plays a vital role in society by ensuring the continuity of freight and passenger transportation, maintaining essential maritime connections, and supporting national security of supply and international trade.
We at Finnlines aim to meet the international transport needs as efficiently and environmentally consciously as possible. Substantial part of all the international freight transported over the Baltic Sea is carried by our vessels, which makes us an essential part of the logistics chains in the area.
Finnlines offers ferry crossings across the Baltic Sea with our ro-pax service that combines passenger and freight transport, which increase the utilisation rate onboard ships. Higher utilisation rates in routes and vessels guarantees the possibility to travel in an efficient way.
Shipping is a highly regulated industry via international, European, and national frameworks. In order to reach the environmental targets, new technologies must be developed and alternative fuels produced in the upcoming years. Finnlines supports the transition towards greener shipping and participates in developing low-emission maritime transportation.

2025
To advance these goals and report on our steps toward environmentally sustainable maritime transport, we published our first voluntary Sustainability Review on 13 March , 2026.
New methanol-powered vessels ordered
Finnlines has ordered three new methanol-powered vessels, which are expected to enter the route between Helsinki and Travemünde in 2028–2029.
New and innovative Superstar-vessels
Environmental considerations were taken into account in the design of the new vessels, from the technical construction to the selection of individual suppliers. The ships use state-of-the-art technology such as an innovative air lubrication system and run on shore power in port.
Finnlines’ hybrid ro-ros
Each vessel provides a cargo capacity of 5,800 lane metres – equivalent to approximately 400 trailers – and is designed for the efficient handling of diverse cargo types, including oversized freight. The ships are equipped with advanced technologies which contribute to reduced emissions and support more sustainable sea transport services.
Two pathways to lower emissions: electricity and biofuels

Cutting emissions is essential not only for long-term business success, but for the well-being of our society and the planet. As the demand for low-carbon transport grows, we’re continuously developing our operations to deliver efficient, reliable, and environmentally responsible solutions.
Green Lane – low-carbon sea transportation
Officially introduced in 2025, this low-emission transport service gives both freight customers and passengers a concrete way to reduce their carbon footprint and support the global green transition.
By using electric energy and certified biofuels, Green Lane can lower customer’s transport-related emissions – 100% with electric energy (TTW) and by up to 90% with biofuels (WTW).

Commitments
Finnlines is committed to long-term efforts for the environment. Environmental responsibility is part of our daily operations and it is included in operative and strategic planning and in our close co-operation with numerous stakeholders.
Climate actions
The International Maritime Organization, IMO, has set an ambitious target to reduce total annual GHG emissions from international shipping to reach net-zero by or around close to 2050. In order to reach the target, new technologies must be developed and alternative fuels produced in the upcoming years. Finnlines supports the transition towards greener shipping and participates in developing low-emission maritime transportation.
Protecting the environment
In addition to direct air emissions, shipping also has other environmental effects. Recycling, reuse and smart use of resources are part of our normal operations but we aim to be better and reduce our ecological footprint further. We monitor, measure and assess our progress. Our environmental work complies with the ISO14001:2015 standard and is frequently verified by a third party .
Social responsibility – Serving the society around us
In a larger scale, sustainable business means for us also being an active member of our society. Finnlines participates in many ways in maintaining and developing the society. We employ, train, provide security of supply and participate both in decision making processes and research work.
