Finnlines has celebrated the six-month milestone of its new connection on the North Sea & Biscay Line at an event held on 12 December in Gdynia, Poland. Launched in June 2025, the weekly ro-ro service connects Gdynia directly with Belgium, the UK, Spain and Finland.

Through the global Grimaldi Group network, it also provides Polish customers with access to  routes linking Europe to the Far East, the Middle East, the Mediterranean, West Africa, South America and the East Coast of the United States.

The event gathered around 70 participants in total, including industry representatives, partners, customers and media. Attendees received an update on the development of Finnlines’ North Sea & Biscay Line service, joined a guided tour of the Port of Gdynia and visited M/s Finneco III for an insight into Finnlines’ modern ro-ro operations.

Finnlines was represented at the event by Commercial Director Merja Kallio-Mannila, Line Manager Blasco Majorana and Managing Director of Finnlines Polska Sp. z o.o. Rafał Kwapisz, alongside Piotr Gorzeński, CEO of the Port of Gdynia Authority and Jerzy Majewski, CEO of OT Port Gdynia Ltd.

“The expansion of the North Sea & Biscay service to Poland reflects our continued commitment to providing our clients with reliable and cost-effective solutions across Europe. This new connection, combining large economies of scale, operational efficiency and technological innovation, offers a sustainable intermodal alternative to road transport for cargo moving from Poland to the UK, Belgium, France and Spain,” says Blasco Majorana, Line Manager, Finnlines.

“This event underscores the importance of close collaboration with our stakeholders, especially as growing volumes and rising customer expectations put greater emphasis on supply chain efficiency. The expanded North Sea & Biscay Line gives our customers increased flexibility between key European markets and more control over their cargo flows,” adds Rafał Kwapisz, Managing Director, Finnlines Poland.

“This connection strengthens not only the service portfolio but the strategic position of the Port of Gdynia within European logistics,” says Piotr Gorzeński, CEO of the Port of Gdynia Authority. “Gdynia is becoming a key hub on the North–West axis, and our cooperation with Finnlines accelerates this transformation. This line gives our customers real competitive advantage: predictability, scale and the speed modern business demands. Gdynia is investing, growing and moving forward with determination. Together with Finnlines, we are setting a new standard for ro-ro operations in the region.”

“Gdynia has always been a city looking toward the future. Here, maritime tradition meets innovation, and the determination of entrepreneurs results into real-world solutions. The new ro-ro line is an excellent example of this approach – modern, efficient, and environmentally friendly. It will increase the capacity of the North–West corridor, streamline cargo handling, and contribute to even deeper economic integration with our European partners,” says Jerzy Majewski CEO of OT Port Gdynia Ltd. “Today’s inauguration is proof that when we join, we create projects that benefit the economy, businesses, and communities in Europe. I am convinced that this new line will become a vital part of European logistics, bringing benefits to all market participants and strengthening Gdynia’s role as one of the key ports in our region.”

Low-emission freight service

The service is operated with three next-generation hybrid ro-ro vessels capable of carrying a wide range of cargo types, including ro-ro, breakbulk, containers, vehicles and project cargo. In addition, Finnlines offers 80’ mafi trailers with integrated rails, specifically designed for transporting trains, wind turbine components and other special cargo.

Each vessel has a cargo capacity of up to 400 trailers or 5,800 lane metres.

Finnlines modern hybrid vessels incorporate technical solutions that enable up to 90% reductions in CO2 emissions. Energy efficiency is enhanced through the use of lithium-ion batteries, solar panels, an optimised hull design and an innovative air-lubrication system. The Finneco vessels’ enhanced fuel-saving technologies, combined with a zero-emission solution while in port, offer significantly lower emissions per transported cargo unit than alternative seaborne connections.

The sister vessels Finneco I, Finneco II and Finneco III operating on the route highlight  Finnlines’ and its owner the Grimaldi Group’s, strong commitment to sustainability and innovation.

Efficient logistic solutions

Finnlines specialises in freight transport and continues to strengthen its role as a key maritime service provider between Northern Europe and Continental Europe. Regular connections between Finland, Poland, Belgium, the UK, Spain and Ireland – together with seamless integration into the extensive Grimaldi network – enable efficient logistic solutions for businesses across Europe.
