New arrivals

The construction of two eco-efficient ro-pax vessels has started in China. While the shipyard proceeds with various production phases, Finnlines finetunes the service concept. To have everything ready for the new arrivals, Finnlines’ organization has also been strengthened.

Marco Palmu made a Finnlines comeback at the beginning of September when he started in his position as the a Head of Passenger Services. In fact, Marco has worked in the travel business for 30 years and his experience ranges from tour operators to travel agencies and several ferry lines. Before returning Finnlines, Marco acted as a Commercial Director at Tallink Silja.

“I was delighted to meet many former colleagues when I was introduced at Finnlines during my first few days and I am really thankful for the warm welcome. It is also a relief to work in a thriving company, which has a strong position on the market.” By mid-October Marco had set foot on all ro-pax ships, which call Finland, and he hopes to have visited the ships on the Malmö–Travemünde route latest by Christmas.

In the late 1990s Marco worked at FG-Shipping, a Finnlines subsidiary, where he promoted passenger services. However, the maximum number of passengers was just over 100. Today, the largest ro-pax ships accommodate some 550 passengers and in 2023 Finnlines will make a giant leap when the Superstar sisters with a capacity for 1,100 join the fleet.

New heights, more freight

During the next few years, Marco and his team will be fully occupied with the new ro-pax vessels. “Our sales and marketing efforts will have to be taken to the next level since the Superstar ships will offer a new kind of exciting Finnlines product. The Star Club is an important communication channel where members are kept up-to-date with newsletters.

Members are also entitled to discounts, travel offers and partner deals. We work with many different partners, such as so-called social media influencers, many of whom have thousands of followers.”

Marco feels confident that Finnlines’ other ro-pax lines will also benefit from the arrival of the Superstars, Finncanopus and Finnsirius, in 2023. “Finnlines will be better known when our capacity grows snd services are upgraded.”

Although Marco concentrates on recreational passengers, he points out that freight will come first as today. “Freight is Finnlines’ core business and professional drivers are our predominant passenger segment. I am sure that drivers, too, will  appreciate the new services and facilities.“

"After months and months of lockdown, the travel business has recovered quickly. Germans set off as soon as travel restrictions were lifted and 'migratory birds' are now leaving Finland to spend the winter in Southern Europe, many of them in Spain. Our frequent travellers prefer a hassle-free and laidback sea voyage to hectic air travel”, Marco Palmu says.
