Finnlines 70 years
Finnish entrepreneurs found the shipping company “Oy Finnlines Ltd”, to take wood to Europe and North America.
The first vessel built just for Finnlines, MS Finntrader, makes its maiden voyage. MS Finnpulp, MS Finnmerchant and MS Finnsailor follow just two years later.
Finnlines provides its first passenger connection between Finland and Germany, on the MS Hansa Express, which carries 8,656 passengers, 1,291 cars and 415 lorries in just the first year.
MS Finnhansa, the first Finnish-made passenger ferry, begins operating the Travemünde-Helsinki route. Able to carry 1,700 passengers, she is the largest ferry on the Baltic Sea.
GTS Finnjet, the world’s largest and fastest ferry, conquers the Baltic Sea and captures the hearts of her passengers. GTS Finnjets carries passengers from Travemünde to Helsinki in just 22 hours, with service so good that guests say she is a “floating luxury hotel”. 1989 Finnlines begins shipping freight between Finland and Sweden. Passengers join this route in 2008.
The Clipper class ro-pax vessels MS Finnclipper, MS Finneagle and MS Finnfellow set sail and now connect Finland and Sweden.
Finnlines’ current flagships are launched, the most modern ro-pax ferries on the Baltic. These Star class vessels now connect Germany with Sweden and Finland.
The Grimaldi Group from Naples becomes Finnlines’ largest shareholder. We can now serve our freight customers on almost any ocean.
Finnlines invests 100 million euros in environmental technology, reducing the fleet’s fuel consumption by 8.3%. We also give our Star and Clipper class vessels a three million euro facelift. In 2016, the Grimaldi Group becomes the sole owner.
